'SSCS CASUAL COMBAT CLASSES'
Wednesday: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
"SSCS MASTERCLASSES" SSCS Masterclasses are a one day Stage Combat experience. Designed as an introduction to Stage Combat they cover a variety of different weapons and combat systems. Each Masterclass covers the basics of footwork, balance, combat movement, timing, offensive and defensive techniques, partnership, safety and fun. All Masterclasses finish with a short piece of choreography to see how the techniques learnt through-out the day come together for use in performance. Masterclasses are an exciting day that are open and appropriate to everyone who has ever had a love of swords and sword movies and had the desire to try it in a safe and supportive environment. Everything we do is about partnership and performance. We do not spar or train in a competitive nature. Ever. No prior experience is necessary. The SSCS is proud to announce the next series of Masterclasses for 2009:
'FANTASY SWORD' This one day workshop is a culmination of the techniques of all of your favourite sword movies: "Star Wars", "Highlander", "Lord of the RIngs", "Conan" etc. This Masterclass is a taste of the Hollywood two-handed sword, this is not an historically accurate combat system, but includes basic attacks and parries and a bunch of funky spins and twirls now made famous by the last few "Star Wars" films. When: Sunday August 30th Time: 10:00am to 5:00pm Where: St. Canice's Church Hall, 28 Roslyn St, Kings Cross Cost: $115.00
'PIRATE BORADING TECHNIQUES' Arrgghh! The smell of the sea, the wind in your face and a Tomahawk in your chest. Contrary to popular belief the Cutlass was not the most common choice of weapon for Pirates of the high seas during ship to ship boarding, given the close proximity to your fellow shipmates and rigging the use of the Tomahawk & Long Knife was much prefered. This one day workshop will examine the combative techniques of two of the oldest weapons in history and there effectiveness in close quarters combat. When: Sunday September 13th Time: 10:00am to 5:00pm Where :St. Canice's Church Hall, 28 Roslyn St, Kings Cross Cost: $115.00
'FIGHTING FOR FILM' This is a special two day workshop focusing on camera techniques and the performance of fights for film and TV and examines the subtle differences between stage and film fighting. The first day includes various techniques of Unarmed combat, camera angles, film set terminology and understanding how the the camera works and your responsibilities when filming fights. The second day will be spent leanring a short piece of choreography and then filming it including; wide Master shots, close ups, reverses and pickups. A DVD of your work will be available after the workshop for an additional cost if you would like a copy . When: Saturday & Sunday October 24th & 25th Time: 10:00am to 5:00pm daily Where: St. Canice's Church Hall, 28 Roslyn St, Kings Cross Cost: $245.00
'SWORD & SHIELD' Almost every culture in history used the combination of the Sword and the Shield at some point in their evolution. From the Ancient Greeks and Egytpians, to the Vikings and of course the legendary Knights in shining armour. This one day workshop will not focus on any one cultures system, but instead will be a generic combination of the use of the sword and shield together. When: Sunday November 8th Time: 10:00am to 5:00pm Where :St. Canice's Church Hall, 28 Roslyn St, Kings Cross Cost: $115.00
" BASIC LEVEL CERTIFICATE COURSE" This is a one week intensive course and covers 'Unarmed' and 'Single Theatrical Sword' for the stage and screen. As this is a certified workshop it culminates in an exam. The exam consists of you and a partner learning a piece of choreography, which includes elements of both systems, and then performing that choreography within the context of a scene complete with dialogue. This is all covered within the week. You spend the first half of the week learning the techniques and the second working on the exam choreo. The fight is choreographed and directed by the Instructor. When: Sunday August 16th to Saturday 22nd 2009 Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm daily. " SAFDi UNIT 1.2; THEATRICAL SWORD" This special four day workshop is a unique opportunity to study stage combat and only covers 'Unit 1.2; Theatrical Sword' from the SAFDi's Basic Stage Combat Certificate. It is designed for those that have completed 'Unit 1.1; Unarmed Combat' to complete their Basic requirements and gain their certificate, however it is also open to anyone that would like to learn this weapon based on the cutting and thrusting style of the Renaissance 'Sidesword'. It will culminate in a performance exam, and the ranking is then current for 12 months if you wish to complete 'Unit 1.1'. When: Monday September 14th to Friday 17th 2009 Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm daily. Where :St. Canice's Church Hall, 28 Roslyn St, Kings Cross Cost: $275.00
'INTERMEDIATE LEVEL CERTIFICATE COURSE' This is the next step for serious Actor/Combatants that have completed their 'Basic Certification' requirements. This one week intensive workshop takes a much more historically accurate approach to Stage Combat and strengthens, heightens and extends upon your skills. Covering four different combat systems (Units); 'Rapier & Dagger', 'Dueling Sword', 'Martial Arts for the Stage & Screen' and 'Asian Staff', this is a truly challenging week that will change the way you view and approach fight scenes on stage forever, but the rewards are worth ever drop of sweat. As with all certification workshops this week will end with a performance fight scene in each style. (N.B. If it had been a while since you completed your Basic, or had a sword in your hand, and you wish to participate in this workshop I strongly suggest that you try to get to a few Casuals beforehand. As mentioned the new curriculum is quite challenging and you need a reasonable level of skill to start this workshop if you expect success.)
